Lipolaser

What is laser-assisted liposuction?

Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL), also known as laser lipo, is a minimally invasive procedure to remove excess fat from the body, reshape the body and reduce cellulitis.

High-intensity laser light is used to liquefy fat under the skin for removal. The laser light is inserted through a small incision and the emulsified fat deposits are removed via a cannula.

Why is LAL done?

LAL is done remove local accumulations of fat, to contour the body and to reduce cellulitis. The primary advantage of this procedure is its minimally invasive nature which means that patients can be treated in less than three hours. Patients can see results immediately after the procedure.

What does it involve?

A small incision is made in the skin into the fatty area and a small laser is used to melt the fat cells. LAL can be done on many body parts, including the legs, tummy and arms. A fibre optic light allows the surgeon to see under the skin and deliver the laser where needed. The liquefied fat cells are suctioned out by the surgeon via a cannula.

Laser-assisted liposuction is less invasive and requires less recovery time than traditional liposuction wherein the surgeon injects a saline solution, an anaesthetic to relieve pain and epinephrine to constrict blood vessels. A vacuum is used to suck out the fat and fluid from the body. This method is more invasive and sometimes requires an IV drip to replenish fluids after the operation.

How to prepare for it

Preparation for LAL is similar to preparation for any surgical intervention: you will undergo a medical examination to detect any abnormalities and to determine whether the treatment is suitable for you.

Post-operative care

Post-operative care is minimal. Generally, patients can return to work 2-3 days after surgery, but any strenuous activity should be avoided for a few days. Bruising and swelling after surgery should go down dramatically after a week. A good diet and exercise are still essential to avoid any build-up of fat in other parts of the body that have not been treated.
