Mr Gareth Bashir

Mr Gareth Bashir is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon in east London and central London, who specialises in hernia surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, haemorrhoid surgery, fistula-in-ano, anal fissure and pilonidal sinus surgery, as well as benign lump, bump and skin lesion removal. He also performs advanced laparoscopic surgery for a range of abdominal and colorectal conditions. Mr Bashir privately practises at the London Independent Hospital and Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, while his NHS base is Barts Health NHS Trust.

He is fully trained in general and colorectal surgery, with particular expertise in open and laparoscopic hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, and proctology, including transanal haemorrhoidal dearterialisation (THD). He also manages gallbladder through minimally invasive approaches.

After graduating with a degree in medicine from the Medical College of St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1999, Mr Bashir undertook surgical training on the Bart’s rotation, followed by a year in critical care and trauma. He completed his higher surgical training in the North East Thames region and obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2010. He subsequently completed two post-CCT fellowships in colorectal surgery, including one at the internationally recognised St Mark’s Hospital, gaining experience in advanced colorectal procedures such as inflammatory bowel disease management, intestinal failure and pelvic floor surgery.

Mr Bashir holds a master’s degree in surgical education from Imperial College London and is deeply involved in surgical teaching and training. He serves as a surgical tutor for Barts Health NHS Trust, an education faculty member and quality assurance assessor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and an ATLS instructor. He also contributes to postgraduate education as a committee member of the ASGBI Education & Training and ASGBI Emergency General Surgery committees, as well as the Royal College of Surgeons Education faculty and the School of Surgery.

A strong advocate for collaborative and multidisciplinary care, Mr Bashir combines his clinical expertise with a focus on patient-centred outcomes and safety. His commitment to surgical education extends internationally, having served as an associate professor at St George’s University (Grenada).

Outside of medicine, Mr Bashir has demonstrated leadership and teamwork at the highest levels of sport. A former member of the Welsh sabre fencing team, he led his team to a silver medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and later held leadership roles in major international fencing events, including the London 2012 Olympic Games. His approach to surgery reflects the same principles of discipline, teamwork and precision that define his sporting achievements.
