Professional statement
Dr Gulam Haji is an esteemed consultant pulmonologist at Imperial College Healthcare Trust. He serves as co-lead for the Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Service and is the trust joint lead for venous thromboembolism.
He qualified from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2006 and was appointed in 2010 to the highly prestigious North West Thames specialist training programme in respiratory medicine. During this period, he undertook extensive clinical training across asthma, interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis, sleep and ventilation, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
He completed a PhD at the Royal Brompton Hospital and the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, focusing on exercise intolerance, mitochondrial function, skeletal muscle physiology, and airways disease. This work enabled him to develop an in-depth understanding of cardio-pulmonary and musculoskeletal physiology, as well as mitochondrial biology.
In his final year of specialist training at Barnet Hospital, he managed a broad range of general respiratory clinics. This included lung cancer services, as well as regular clinics caring for patients with tuberculosis and complex lung infections.
His clinical expertise spans general respiratory medicine, breathlessness, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, pulmonary embolism and hypertension, skeletal muscle function, athletic performance, exercise training, airways disease, mitochondrial biology, respiratory immunology, and clinical research including trials. Alongside his clinical work, he is active in a charitable trust supporting projects both in the UK and internationally, serves as a non-executive director and strategic advisor at board level, and is currently involved in the development of innovative healthcare technologies.
