Mr John Parkin is a highly experienced consultant urological surgeon with extensive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of urological conditions, with a particular focus on prostate disease and urological cancers. He is part of Birmingham Prostate Specialists at The Harborne Hospital part of HCA Healthcare.
He is also currently a consultant at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, a position he has held since 2020. Prior to this, he worked for over a decade as a consultant urological surgeon at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. Alongside his NHS work, Mr Parkin is actively involved in private practice at a number of leading institutions, including The Priory Hospital and Spire Parkway Hospital, and he also sees patients at The Harborne Hospital, Birmingham Prostate Clinic and GenesisCare Birmingham Radiotherapy Centre.
Mr Parkin graduated in medicine from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1994 and went on to complete his surgical training in Scarborough, Bristol and New Zealand. He subsequently undertook six years of higher specialist training in urology in the West Midlands, gaining comprehensive experience at major centres such as the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. During this period, he developed expertise across general urology, endourology and laparoscopic surgery. In recognition of his growing contribution to the specialty, he was elected in 2005 as a junior representative on the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) committee for endourology.
He has a well-established special interest in laparoscopic surgery and the management of urological cancers, particularly prostate cancer. Mr Parkin was part of the specialist team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital that introduced radical cystectomy, reflecting his involvement in the development of advanced surgical services. His clinical approach combines technical expertise with a strong emphasis on personalised, evidence-based care, ensuring that patients are fully informed and supported throughout their treatment journey.
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Parkin is committed to education and training. He has served as a member of the West Midlands Urology Registrar Training Committee, contributing to the development and supervision of urology trainees. He is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Association of Urological Surgeons, the British Medical Association and the Medical Defence Union.
