Ultrasound-guided joint injections: how they work, who they help and what to expect

Dr Liubov Borukhson is a consultant rheumatologist based in London, with a particular expertise in musculoskeletal ultrasound. She is a consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, based primarily at Charing Cross Hospital, and sees private patients at the Thames View at Charing Cross Hospital, the Sainsbury Wing at Hammersmith Hospital and the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital.
Dr Borukhson manages the full range of rheumatological conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis, lupus and the connective tissue diseases, vasculitis, osteoporosis and rare autoimmune disorders. She also sees many people with unexplained joint pain, back pain or raised inflammatory markers who have not yet been given a diagnosis.
Her clinics are built around point-of-care musculoskeletal ultrasound. The consultation, the ultrasound assessment and, where needed, an ultrasound-guided joint or soft tissue injection can often take place in a single visit, so that reaching a diagnosis and starting treatment are not spread across several appointments.
Dr Borukhson graduated with first-class honours from Donetsk National Medical University in 2007 and completed her specialist rheumatology training in leading tertiary centres, including Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, University College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital in London. She holds an MSc in Rheumatology from King’s College London and a Postgraduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound from the University of East London, and is registered with the General Medical Council.
She consults in English, Russian and Ukrainian. She is recognised by the major private medical insurers, including Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Healix and Allianz, and is fee-assured with every insurer she works with.
Further information about her clinics, the conditions she treats, and fees and insurance is available on her practice website.
