Ms Hicklin qualified from the University of London in 1988, and underwent surgical training in London and the South of England, earning a fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996 and completing another in otolaryngology in 2002. Upon completing her higher training, she was appointed consultant ENT surgeon at St George’s Hospital, where she set up and ran services for voice patients, including a multidisciplinary voice clinic and neurolaryngology service. She has been practising as a consultant for over 20 years. She retired from her substantive NHS post in 2023 but is still very involved with the department, regularly providing cover and advice to her successor.
In addition to her clinical practice, Ms Hicklin is the author of several peer-reviewed publications and has presented research at international ENT and neurology conferences; she has also reviewed papers for various esteemed journals in her field. As a researcher, Ms Hicklin is interested in spasmodic dysphonia, neck dystonia, retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (R-CPD), snoring, and facial pain. She takes part in medical education as a teacher and trainer of fellow doctors and medical professionals on voice and swallowing problems. Ms Hicklin is one of the few practitioners in the UK equipped to treat the newly-termed R-CPD, also known as no-burp syndrome.
