Mr Manu Mathew

Mr Manu Mathew is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, specialising in cataract surgery, laser vision correction (LASIK, LASEK and PRK), refractive lens exchange, glaucoma care and YAG laser capsulotomy. He is listed on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology and has more than 35 years of experience in eye surgery and patient care.

Across his NHS and private career, Mr Mathew has performed over 40,000 eye procedures. This includes more than 20,000 cataract operations, over 15,000 lens replacement and intraocular lens procedures, and more than 3,000 laser vision correction treatments. He has assessed and managed over 2,000 different eye conditions, giving him particular confidence in complex and previously treated eyes.

Mr Mathew qualified in medicine at the University of Madras, he completed further specialist training at UK teaching hospitals including the Tennent Institute at the University of Glasgow and the Queen's Medical Centre at the University of Nottingham, where he was appointed specialist registrar and clinical lecturer. He then held a substantive consultant post at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where he was clinical lead for the cornea, external eye disease and glaucoma service and served as specialty doctor tutor. He stepped down from his NHS post in 2021 to concentrate on private practice.

Mr Mathew sees patients at Dr MM Eye Care on Wheatbridge Road in Chesterfield, with surgery carried out at a surgical facility on Basil Close, Chesterfield. Patients travel to him from across Derbyshire, Sheffield, Nottingham and the wider East Midlands.

His practice covers the full range of modern cataract and refractive eye surgery. He treats cataracts using small-incision phacoemulsification with monofocal, toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus intraocular lenses, and offers refractive lens exchange for patients who want lasting freedom from reading glasses. For patients with short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism, he performs LASIK, LASEK and PRK laser vision correction, as well as implantable contact lens surgery for prescriptions outside the laser range. He also provides glaucoma assessment and long-term monitoring, treatment for corneal and external eye disease including dry eye and contact lens related problems, and YAG laser capsulotomy for patients whose vision has clouded again after cataract surgery.

Mr Mathew's approach is built around detailed assessment and honest advice. Every patient receives a thorough examination and scan-based measurement of the eye before any recommendation is made, and he will tell a patient plainly when surgery is not the right option. Care is consultant-led from the first consultation through surgery and follow-up, so patients see the same surgeon throughout.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Mathew has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and presented research to his peers at national and international meetings, with a particular research interest in ocular surface infection and the eye's natural defences. He has received awards for his contribution to medical education and ophthalmology in the UK and abroad, and has trained fellows and residents throughout his career. He is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the UK and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), EuRetina and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
