He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2019.


Following this, Mr Chana undertook extensive tripartite sub-specialist fellowship training in complex UGI and oesophagogastric surgery at world-leading institutions: 


• Senior Oesophagogastric and Bariatric Fellow and Adjunct Lecturer at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne working with Professor Wendy Brown


• Royal College of Surgeons of England Senior Clinical Fellowship in Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital, London working with Professors James Gossage and Andrew Davies 


• Association of Upper GI Surgery Travelling Fellow to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York working with Professor Daniela Molena. 


His extensive training experience enhances his approach to treating both cancer-related and benign upper GI conditions, ensuring that patients receive cutting edge, evidence based, patient-centred care. Prior to joining the outstanding UGI team in Gloucestershire, Mr Chana spent three years working as a consultant in a large NHS university teaching hospital trust. 


Alongside his clinical commitments, Mr Chana has a strong academic background. He completed his doctoral thesis at Imperial College London, undertaking research within the NIHR-funded Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality under the supervision of Professor Ara the Lord Darzi of Denham. His work explored how institutional and organisational factors influence outcomes following high-risk surgery, with the aim of improving safety and clinical performance in his field. He remains an honorary clinical fellow within Imperial College London’s Department of Surgery and Cancer and continues to contribute to surgical outcome-based research and is currently supervising his second PhD student.


He is committed to providing high-quality, patient-focused care, combining clinical expertise, thoughtful communication and evidence-based practice to support people with both complex and routine upper gastrointestinal problems.
