An introduction to Mr Purnajyoti Banerjee

Mr Purnajyoti Banerjee is a highly accomplished consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon in central London and south London. He specialises in spine injury, back pain and back injury, alongside lumbar decompression surgery, lumbar disc removal surgery, spinal fracture fixation, osteoporotic fracture surgery and cervical decompression. He privately practises at the London Spine Unit at The Harley Street Hospital and LIPS - Battersea Power Station Clinic. His NHS base was previously at The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust.
A significant focus of Mr Banerjee’s clinical practice is the application of minimally invasive, or keyhole, surgical techniques. By utilising these advanced methods, he aims to reduce post-operative pain and expedite the recovery process for his patients. He was a pioneer of these techniques when he worked in the NHS Northamptonshire region and continues to refine his approach to ensure that surgical interventions are as precise and tissue-sparing as possible. His practice is defined by a commitment to improving patient mobility and quality of life through both surgical and non-surgical means.
Mr Banerjee qualified in medicine from Calcutta University in 2000 and has since built a distinguished international career; with training spanning India, Germany, and the UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and holds a Master’s degree in Trauma and Orthopaedics from Warwick University. His sub-specialist training is extensive, including a complex spine fellowship at St George’s Hospital in London and the prestigious AOSpine Fellowship in Japan, where he focused on advanced endoscopic and minimally invasive spine surgery. These experiences allow him to integrate the latest international surgical innovations into his daily practice.
Beyond his surgical work, Mr Banerjee is an expert in non-operative spinal care and diagnostic accuracy. He provides a comprehensive range of spinal injections, including epidurals, nerve root blocks, and radiofrequency ablations, to manage chronic pain and sciatica. He also specialises in regenerative therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, and uses high-resolution imaging to ensure treatment is targeted with the highest degree of accuracy. This holistic approach often involves close collaboration with physical therapists, prioritising a recovery path that avoids major surgery whenever a more conservative intervention is viable.
In addition to his clinical roles, Mr Banerjee is deeply committed to medical education and professional leadership. He is an honorary lecturer at the University of Dundee and is actively involved in training the next generation of spine surgeons through cadaveric and surgical education courses. His professional standing is further reflected in his role as a specialist assessor for the General Medical Council (GMC) and his previous appointment as an editor for the British Orthopaedic Association. Through his research, teaching, and clinical leadership, Mr Banerjee remains at the forefront of the orthopaedic community, ensuring his patients receive evidence-led and compassionate care.
