Professional statement

Dr Rachna Murthy is an award-winning consultant ophthalmologist, oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon based in London and Cambridge. She is expert in all areas of eyelid surgery, including blepharoplasty and the treatment of ptosis (droopy eye) and periocular skin cancer. She also specialises in brow and eyelid procedures and the treatment of dark circles. Dr Murthy also specialises in a range of innovative treatments using light technology to treat dry eye including OptiLight.

In partnership with highly respected fellow consultant ophthalmologist, oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon Professor Jonathan Roos, Dr Murthy established Face Restoration, a leading centre for excellence in facial aesthetics and diseases of the eyes and eyelids. They are a highly respected duo of international renown who together have over fifty years of experience in the field. Their unique approach of seamless teamwork optimises results and prioritises patient safety. The pair see all of their patients together, meaning that patients benefit from two expert opinions in every consultation. Dr Murthy and Professor Roos also employ the most innovative technology in every step of their treatment, with each consultation including 3D photo imaging and skin analysis with VISIA.

Using their expert knowledge, Dr Murthy and Professor Roos have also developed Purifeyes™, a microbial and pH balanced periocular skin and eye cleanser. The two specialists also work as a team to train other aesthetic specialists on a course based in Cambridge to promote best practice, safety and excellent patient outcomes.

Dr Murthy qualified in medicine from University College London in 1995 before going on to complete several fellowships in specialised areas of ophthalmology. The first of these was at Melbourne’s renowned Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, specialising in adnexal and lacrimal surgery. Following this, she completed a further two senior fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital and within the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where she focused on eyelid aesthetic and cancer reconstruction. She continued within the NHS for over a decade as a consultant ophthalmologist, oculoplastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon as well as lead clinician for periocular skin cancer. She also led a multi-disciplinary team treating thyroid eye disease at Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital for a number of years. She now works exclusively in private practice both as a cofounder and specialist practitioner at Face Restoration.

Throughout her esteemed career Dr Murthy has held a number of senior positions in education, including as a specialty tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmology and a faculty member of the East Anglia sinus and oculoplastic cadaveric dissection course. She has also held a faculty member position at the Allergan Medical Institute since 2017 and is medical director of the Aesthetic Clinical Training Academy, which works to ensure best practice, quality and safety in cosmetic medicine.

Dr Murthy was recently awarded the ‘Consultant Surgeon of the Year’ prize at 2022’s Aesthetics Awards. Her excellence as an aesthetics practitioner has been recognised by international publications such as Tatler and Hello magazine. She is also renowned for her research and her academic work is widely published in peer-reviewed journals within her field of expertise. She is additionally an invited author for the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society and a current member of the editorial board of the PMFA journal.

Dr Murthy’s expertise is widely recognised and she has held various senior positions in the field of ophthalmology. Notably, she was a college tutor of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a council member of the Royal Society of Medicine’s ophthalmology section. She is amongst just a handful of surgeons who have been elected as full members of the British, European and American Societies of Ophthalmic Plastic, Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery.
