Professor Ranee Thakar, MD FRCOG, serves as a consultant obstetrician and urogynaecologist based in London, and an honorary professor of women's health at the University of Liverpool.
She was the president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) in December 2022. She was honoured in 2023 with the President’s Award for Outstanding Leadership by the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. Previously, she served as President of the International Urogynecological Association and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2022.
Professor Thakar has also received honorary fellowships from prestigious organisations, including the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Japanese College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons.
With over 200 academic publications, Professor Thakar has significantly advanced the understanding and management of perineal trauma. Her expertise includes both conservative and surgical treatments for pelvic floor disorders, such as bladder and bowel incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexual dysfunction. She has also developed specialised training programs for obstetricians and midwives worldwide to improve maternal care and reduce complications related to perineal trauma. At Croydon University Hospital, she leads a demanding clinical practice while engaging in teaching, mentoring, and conducting impactful research.
Professor Thakar’s clinical and academic roles underscore her dedication to advancing women’s health globally. She is highly skilled in repairing obstetric anal sphincter injuries, performing pelvic reconstructive surgeries, and offering tailored non-surgical interventions.
