Dr Robert Lown is a consultant haematologist based in Hampshire. He specialises in treating lymphoma – including Hodgkin, non-Hodgkin, high-grade, and low-grade lymphomas – and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), utilising treatments such as CAR-T cell therapy, stem cell transplantation, and immunotherapy.
Dr Lown qualified from University College London Medical School in 2004 and undertook his training at famed London institutions such as the Royal Brompton Hospital, the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and the Lewisham Hospital. His focus on haematology began with specialist training across London, at the Royal Marsden Hospital and St George’s Hospital, and at University Hospital Southampton. In 2013, he was awarded an MD for research in stem cell transplantation from University College London and the Anthony Nolan Research Institute. Dr Lown was made a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007 and a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2014.
He was made a consultant 2015, and is currently the clinical lead for the autologous stem cell transplantation and the autologous stem cell transplantation services in Wessex.
Dr Lown has been recognised for his achievements in haemato-oncology with several achievements. He was the winner of the American Society of Haematology Abstract Achievement Award in both 2014 and 2015. He was awarded one of two places on the National Cancer Research Institute haemato-oncology clinical trials trainee scheme from 2014 to 2016. Also in 2014, he led a press conference on the impact of ethnicity in stem cell donation at the American Society of Haematology’s annual meeting.
In addition to his practice, Dr Lown is an active researcher and partakes in clinical supervision. He is a member of the Southampton lymphoma group, which monitors inpatient and outpatient care of lymphoma patients and researches new approaches to their treatment through clinical trials. The group is one of the leading recruiters to clinical trials for lymphoma treatment in the country.
