Mr Roberto Casula is a distinguished consultant cardiothoracic surgeon based in London. He is highly proficient in mitral, aortic and tricuspid valve minimally invasive surgery, as well as valve repairs and replacements, atrial fibrillation surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting (traditional and off-pump), and robotic cardiac surgery. In addition, he also performs redo and complex operations.
Mr Casula consults privately at Cleveland Clinic London Hospital. With over 35 years’ experience, he also practises for Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust since 2000, where he serves as head of cardiothoracic surgery as well. Notably, Mr Casula was the first surgeon in the UK to perform robotic, totally endoscopic, minimally invasive heart procedures in 1990.
From 2003 to 2009, Mr Casula successfully led the Robotic Cardiac Surgical programme at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington. After the cardiac services relocated to Hammersmith Hospital in 2011, he established and has since directed the Minimal Access Valves and Revascularisation Cardiac programme. Mr Casula has also served as a visiting surgeon in Italy, Greece, the Middle East, and the West Indies.
Mr Casula originally qualified from the University of Padova in 1989. He completed higher specialist training in cardiac and thoracic surgery, as well as thoracic organ transplantation. He holds esteemed fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is accredited by both the European Thoracic Surgery Board and the European Cardiac Surgery Board.
Further to his surgical practice, Mr Casula is a leading figure in clinical research and medical education. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and a textbook on minimally invasive thoracic and cardiac surgery. He is also on the editorial advisory board of the International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer-Assisted Surgery and is an honorary senior lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute.
