Mr Simon Pickering

Mr Simon Pickering is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Derby who specialises in knee osteoarthritis, arthroscopy and knee and hip replacement, alongside revision knee replacement, partial knee replacement and joint injections. Mr Pickering practises at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital, while his NHS base is University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Pickering performs more than 250 to 300 arthroplasty procedures each year, maintaining a strong commitment to surgical excellence and patient-centred care. He provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for patients with degenerative joint conditions. His interests also include total and partial knee replacement, hemiarthroplasty, chondroplasty, meniscectomy for meniscus tears and steroid injections. He's dedicated to helping patients achieve optimal mobility and function through advanced surgical techniques and evidence-based management.

After qualifying in medicine from the University of Birmingham, Mr Pickering completed his basic surgical training in Leicester before undertaking specialist orthopaedic training in Nottingham. He was awarded a prestigious research fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons, leading to a Doctorate of Medicine for his work on novel treatments for orthopaedic infection. His international experience includes a sabbatical at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA, and a fellowship year in Brisbane, Australia, where he focused on hip and knee arthroplasty, revision surgery and sports medicine.

Mr Pickering is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and remains actively involved in research, teaching and innovation within orthopaedics. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. In addition, he has taught on training courses both in the UK and abroad, sharing his expertise with fellow surgeons and advancing standards in joint replacement surgery.

Through his clinical, academic and teaching contributions, Mr Pickering continues to play a leading role in the development of modern orthopaedic practice, with a focus on improving outcomes for patients with hip and knee disorders.
