Professional statement
Mr Vittorio Russo is a consultant spinal neurosurgeon based in London, specialising in spinal conditions including neck pain, back pain, sciatica and arm pain caused by nerve compression. He also treats more complex spinal disorders requiring specialist assessment.
He is focused on delivering clear diagnoses and structured treatment plans, helping patients quickly understand the cause of their symptoms and the most appropriate treatment options. Most patients are managed without surgery, and when surgery is required, minimally invasive and targeted techniques are used where appropriate.
He also provides second opinions for patients who have persistent or unresolved symptoms after previous spinal treatment or surgery.
His specialist expertise includes spinal tumours, spinal trauma, complex spinal reconstruction and revision spinal surgery. He works at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, where he manages a large NHS practice at one of the UK’s leading specialist neuroscience centres.
He sees private patients at Cleveland Clinic London Hospital and is dual trained in neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal surgery, with fellowship training in leading centres in the UK and USA.
Mr Vittorio Russo has held several leadership roles within his department, including Deputy Clinical Director from 2018 to 2021. He has also been the lead for metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) services for several years and continues to play a central role in this area, contributing to the delivery of timely, coordinated care for these patients.
Alongside his clinical responsibilities, Mr Russo is actively involved in education and training. He contributes to the teaching and supervision of medical trainees and junior doctors in spinal surgery, supporting the development of the next generation of spinal surgeons. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London (UCL), where he contributes to academic teaching and research within the Institute of Neurology.
Education
Mr Vittorio Russo completed his specialist training in neurosurgery and orthopaedic spinal surgery through a highly competitive and internationally recognised training pathway, with a strong focus on complex spinal surgery.
He undertook advanced fellowship training in leading centres in the United Kingdom and United States, gaining extensive experience in complex spinal reconstruction, spinal tumour surgery, cranio-cervical junction surgery and spinal deformity surgery. His training included time at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, and LSU Health Sciences Centre in New Orleans.
This advanced training provided specialist expertise in both degenerative and complex spinal pathology, including revision surgery, spinal tumours, spinal trauma and high-risk reconstructive procedures.
