Mr Zain Sohail
Professional statement
Mr Zain Sohail is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgery, practising across London and the East of England. His specialist practice focuses on the assessment and treatment of hip and knee pain and osteoarthritis, including joint injections, hip and knee replacement surgery, and the management of more complex joint replacement problems.
He has a particular interest in modern joint replacement techniques and uses computer navigation and robotic-assisted surgery where appropriate. His approach combines careful pre-operative planning with contemporary surgical techniques and enhanced recovery pathways, with the aim of helping patients regain mobility and return to their normal activities as safely and efficiently as possible.
Mr Sohail completed his specialist orthopaedic training on the Cambridge Orthopaedic Rotation and subsequently undertook the British Hip Society-accredited Fellowship in primary and revision joint replacement surgery at University Hospitals Sussex. He later worked as a consultant trauma and arthroplasty surgeon in Sheffield, gaining further experience in complex lower limb trauma at one of the UK's busiest Level 1 major trauma centres.
Alongside primary hip and knee replacement, Mr Sohail has developed specialist experience in complex primary and revision surgery, including the management of patients with previous joint replacements and periprosthetic fractures. This combination of arthroplasty and complex trauma experience allows him to assess both straightforward and more challenging hip and knee conditions.
He believes that the decision to undergo joint replacement should be individual to each patient. His consultations focus on understanding how symptoms affect a patient's everyday life, explaining both surgical and non-surgical options clearly, and allowing patients to make an informed decision about their treatment. Where surgery is appropriate, he has a strong interest in enhanced recovery and day-case arthroplasty, helping suitable patients mobilise early and recover safely following their procedure.
Mr Sohail is actively involved in research and surgical education. He has authored more than 16 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work at national and international meetings. His current interests include improving outcomes following hip and knee replacement, enhanced recovery and day-case arthroplasty, fragility fractures and the delivery of efficient, sustainable joint replacement services.
He contributes to the training of future orthopaedic surgeons through the East of England Orthopaedic Training Programme and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His professional memberships include the British Orthopaedic Association, British Hip Society and SICOT (International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology).
