Top Doctors recently had the pleasure of speaking with revered plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Mr Tariq Ahmad, who, here in our latest article below, provides an expert insight into the different types of rhinoplasty procedures, and reveals how long it generally takes to recover from a rhinoplasty procedure.

Is rhinoplasty always a major procedure?

It really depends on the specific case. It depends entirely on the size, shape, and style of the patient’s nose. You also have to consider whether the rhinoplasty procedure will be performed on the profile of the nose or in the airway. Some patients require a big re-working of the nose, while others simply require a tiny adjustment.

When is a rhinoplasty medically necessary?

If there is septum deviation or trauma to the nose, then of course a rhinoplasty would be necessary to help not only the airway, but also the function of the nose. A rhinoplasty may also be performed even in situations where a patient has suffered a small injury to their nose, with the aim being to act quickly and avoid this injury getting worse and worse over time.

What are the different types of rhinoplasty procedures?

Open or closed rhinoplasty procedures can be performed, depending on the specific case of the patient. With a closed procedure, all the scars are on the inside of the nose, whereas, with an open procedure, all the scars are also on the inside, except one, and that is just on the surface under the partition between the nostrils.

The most recently developed type of rhinoplasty is quite a conservative one. In this procedure, the bridge of the nose will be left alone, and a new bump is dropped by manipulating structures deep to the bridge. This results in the original front edge of the nose remaining intact.

Can a rhinoplasty be performed as a day-case procedure?

Again, it depends entirely on the complexity. If there is no problem with the airway, then certainly those procedures can be done as day-case procedures.

How long does it take to recover?

The bruising can last a couple of weeks, but you can get back to work after a standard rhinoplasty procedure after 10 to 14 days. The maximum time off work and time you will have to recover is three weeks.
