Top Doctors recently spoke to esteemed consultant ophthalmologist, Mr Aires Lobo, who, here in one of our latest articles below, outlines the main symptoms and causes of macular degeneration, whilst also revealing how the common eye condition is treated.

What are the symptoms of macular degeneration?

Usually, the patient presents with reduced or blurry vision, or a distortion of vision. They might also have difficulty reading.

What causes macular degeneration?

It is related to age. As we age, we are more exposed to macular degeneration. It can be caused by predisposition, genetic factors, smoking, and diet. Age, though, is the most common cause.

What treatments are available for macular degeneration?

I often advise my patients to regularly eat dark green vegetables and to avoid bright sunlight. There is no specific treatment available for dry macular degeneration.

For wet macular degeneration, we can use injections that are relatively safe. They have very good outcomes. Dark-coloured greens are advisable for both wet and dry macular degeneration.

What is the difference between wet and dry macular degeneration?

Dry macular degeneration is basically when there is a very slow, progressive change taking place at the back of the eye, where the retina slowly gets damaged over a long period of time. It affects day and night vision. Wet macular degeneration occurs far quicker than dry macular degeneration.

Can macular degeneration be reversed?

Unfortunately, no, macular degeneration cannot be reversed. We can try to stall the progression through treatment, though.
