Liposuction is an extremely common and popular choice of treatment when it comes to the removal of body fat. In our latest article, we spoke with highly esteemed and experienced plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery consultant, Ms Anna De Leo, to quiz her on what a typical liposuction procedure entails and what patients should do before and after surgery.

In relation to liposuction, how should a patient choose their surgeon?

Prior to undergoing any surgical intervention, the task of choosing a surgeon is certainly not an easy one. In order for the patient to feel as comfortable as possible, it is vitally important that a good relationship between the patient and surgeon be established before surgery.

Of course, a patient should inform themselves as much as possible in relation to the surgeon’s qualifications and training, and it is no-doubt essential to find out if the surgeon they are considering is qualified in plastic surgery or not.

Is it possible for the fat to return after a liposuction procedure?

The short answer is yes. If lifestyle changes are not strictly followed after the surgery, fat can return.

Can you detail a common liposuction procedure?

Usually, the patient will arrive to the hospital early in the morning. The designated surgeon will then meet with the patient in their room to highlight any potential areas of concern and to check consent for the surgery to take place.

We usually make micro incisions to reduce cannula entry-point scars and we take extreme caution when placing scars in hidden sites. Hereafter, we then infiltrate liquid to reduce bruises and pain following the liposuction operation.

Different machines and cannula can be used adhering adequately to different patient fat types, and then we suck the fat out. The final stage of the surgical procedure involves absorbable stitches being placed on the tiny wounds.

Once the liposuction procedure has been completed, the patient will wake up with a garment on. Usually, patients typically return to engaging in everyday activities in a short period of time, but they will need to wear a compression garment for a few weeks following the surgery.

Will local or general anesthetic be used?

More often than not, liposuction is performed with local anesthesia and sedation. This means that patients will not receive a large quantity of drugs, but the sufficient amount to not hear or feel the surgeon during liposuction surgery.

What are some common side effects following the procedure?

Swelling after the operation is common, so the use of a compression garment is essential. Occasionally, a lymphatic massage is suggested to reduce the swelling and so too to shorten the recovery period.

What are some of the main do’s and don’ts before a liposuction procedure?

Prior to undergoing a liposuction procedure, it is highly recommended to try to avoid gaining weight. Prioritising exercise on a daily basis and having a balanced, healthy diet are all factors that can help reduce complications during a liposuction. It is, of course, also advisable to follow all post-operative instructions very closely and to read any information-related material given during the pre-op period.

What would your post-operative advice be?

After having a liposuction, it is essential to rest as much as you can, drink plenty of water and engage in as much physical mobility as suggested by your surgeon.
