Benign Prostate Enlargement (BPE), also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition affecting men, especially those over the age of 50. It occurs when the prostate gland enlarges, putting pressure on the urethra and causing urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping urination, weak urine flow, and incomplete bladder emptying.

Treatment for BPE depends on the severity of symptoms, the size of the prostate, age, and overall health. In mild cases, lifestyle changes and monitoring may be sufficient. This includes reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, limiting fluid consumption at night, and regular physical activity.

When symptoms are more bothersome, doctors often prescribe medications. The two main types include alpha-blockers (e.g., tamsulosin), which relax the muscles of the prostate and bladder neck to improve urine flow, and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (e.g., finasteride), which shrink the prostate over time. Sometimes, both medications are used together for greater effectiveness.

If medication isn’t effective, minimally invasive treatments like UroLift or Rezūm may be recommended. UroLift involves placing tiny implants to hold the enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra. Rezūm uses steam therapy to shrink excess prostate tissue.

In more severe cases, surgical options such as Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) may be necessary. TURP removes part of the prostate to relieve pressure. Other surgical techniques include laser therapy and prostatectomy.

BPE is manageable with a range of treatments tailored to individual needs. Early diagnosis and consultation with a healthcare provider are essential for effective management and improved quality of life.
