Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. It primarily encompasses two conditions: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is often caused by long-term exposure to harmful substances, most commonly cigarette smoke, but also includes air pollution, occupational dust, and chemical fumes.

The hallmark of COPD is the obstruction of airflow, which leads to difficulty in breathing, especially during physical activities. Patients may experience symptoms such as chronic cough, sputum production, wheezing, and shortness of breath. These symptoms can significantly impact daily life and overall quality of life. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history assessment, physical examination, and pulmonary function tests, particularly spirometry.

This test measures how much air a person can exhale and how quickly, helping to determine the severity of the disease. Management of COPD focuses on alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life. Smoking cessation is the most crucial step for those who smoke, as it can slow disease progression.

Medications such as bronchodilators and corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to help open airways and reduce inflammation. In more advanced cases, oxygen therapy or surgical interventions like lung volume reduction surgery may be considered. Preventive measures play a vital role in managing COPD. Regular vaccinations against influenza and pneumonia can help prevent respiratory infections that could exacerbate the condition.

Additionally, pulmonary rehabilitation programmes offer structured exercise training and education to enhance physical endurance and coping strategies. While there is currently no cure for COPD, early diagnosis and comprehensive management can significantly improve outcomes for individuals living with this chronic condition. Awareness and education about risk factors are essential in reducing the incidence of COPD globally.
