The orthognathic surgery journey: From your first consultation to final results

Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, can improve the alignment, function and appearance of the jaws and face. For many patients, the journey involves careful planning and several stages, from the initial consultation through to recovery and the final result.

Your first consultation

Your journey begins with a detailed consultation with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Your facial structure, jaw alignment, bite and overall oral health will be assessed. You may have photographs, X-rays, scans or digital impressions taken to understand your individual needs.

Your surgeon will discuss your concerns, explain whether orthognathic surgery is suitable for you and outline the potential benefits, risks and expected outcomes. In many cases, treatment involves collaboration between your surgeon and orthodontist.

Planning your treatment

Once surgery is recommended, detailed treatment planning begins. Orthodontic treatment is often required before and after surgery to prepare the teeth and optimise your bite.

Advanced imaging and digital planning can help your surgical team carefully assess jaw movements and plan the procedure with precision. You will be given an opportunity to discuss the proposed treatment and understand what to expect before, during and after surgery.

Surgery and recovery

Orthognathic surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, with the jaws carefully repositioned according to your treatment plan. Depending on your individual condition, one or both jaws may be treated.

Following surgery, some swelling, bruising and discomfort are expected. Your surgical team will provide detailed advice on diet, oral hygiene, medication and activity during your recovery. Most patients gradually return to their normal routines as healing progresses.

Your final results

The results of orthognathic surgery develop gradually as swelling settles and the jaws heal. Your bite and facial balance should continue to improve throughout the recovery period.

Follow-up appointments allow your surgeon and orthodontist to monitor your progress and make sure your treatment is progressing as planned. While every patient’s journey is different, careful planning and ongoing support can help achieve a functional, balanced and natural-looking result.
