Palpitations are a common sensation—often described as a fluttering, pounding, or racing heartbeat—that many people experience at some point in their lives. While they can feel alarming, most palpitations are harmless and temporary. Understanding what causes them and when they signal something more serious can help you respond calmly and appropriately.

In many cases, palpitations result from everyday triggers. Stress, anxiety, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and even dehydration can cause the heart to beat noticeably faster or harder. Vigorous exercise or sudden changes in position may also lead to brief, benign episodes. In these situations, the sensation typically passes quickly once the trigger is removed. Learning relaxation techniques—such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle stretching—can help reduce these symptoms.

However, palpitations can sometimes be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), thyroid disorders, anaemia, and certain medications may cause more persistent or troubling sensations. Palpitations accompanied by dizziness, fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, or an unusually rapid or irregular heartbeat could indicate a more serious problem and should not be ignored.

It’s important to pay attention to the context in which palpitations occur. If they arise during moments of stress or after stimulants like coffee, simple lifestyle changes may help prevent them. But if the episodes are frequent, worsening, or unexplained, seeking medical evaluation is essential. A healthcare professional may recommend tests such as an ECG, blood work, or a heart monitor to identify the cause.

Ultimately, while palpitations can be unsettling, they are often harmless. Knowing when to relax—and when to seek help—can provide peace of mind and ensure that any underlying issues receive timely attention.
