Dr Sanjay Bhandari is a highly regarded consultant cardiologist based in Leicester, who also practises at Spire Nottingham Hospital, with expertise in chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, and performing specialist heart scans such as echocardiograms and cardiac MRIs. He provides timely access to cardiac investigations and clear, practical explanations, supporting patients in understanding their symptoms and diagnosis. He has expertise in multimodality cardiac imaging, including advanced echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), and cardiac MRI, ensuring precise diagnosis and treatment. He performs over 400 cardiac MRI scans and 400 advanced echocardiography studies annually, reflecting his extensive experience in advanced heart imaging.
Dr Bhandari qualified with first-class honours from the University of Leicester Medical School in 2007, and during his time there he was honoured with the John MacVicar Prize. He achieved a distinction in his intercalated BSc, which was on novel cardiac peptides in acute coronary syndromes, funded by the Health Foundation. He undertook medical training in the East Midlands deanery. In 2010, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians, before returning to the University of Leicester to complete a Master of Research with first-class honours. As part of his academic clinical fellowship, he undertook a PhD investigating the impact of ethnicity on lipoproteins in coronary artery, for which he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellowship. His work is published in renowned international journals. He currently holds the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester.
As a consultant cardiologist, Dr Bhandari specialised in heart valve disease, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and high blood pressure, managing the full spectrum of adult cardiology. He offers a structured and efficient approach to assessment, with access to ECG and echocardiography during consultation where clinically appropriate, helping guide diagnosis and management.
He is fully accredited by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) in cardiac MRIs (level 3) and by the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) for both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography.
Dr Bhandari has a strong passion for education. He is the undergraduate lead for cardiology training at Leicester Medical School. He was awarded the University Hospitals Leicester rising star educator award in 2020. In recognition of his commitment, he was the UK Ambassador for the EACVI Heart Imagers of Tomorrow and is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC).
He was the recipient of Doctify's Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2026.
