Recognising and reversing the early signs of insulin resistance
Insulin resistance is a common but often overlooked metabolic problem that develops gradually over time. In its early stages, it may cause subtle symptoms such as fatigue, increased hunger, weight gain around the abdomen, and impaired cognitive function. Left untreated, it can progress to prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver disease. The encouraging news is that early insulin resistance can often be reversed through changes in diet, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and weight reduction. In the UK, rising obesity levels mean insulin resistance is becoming increasingly common, with around 66% of adults in England now classified as overweight or living with obesity.
