Dr Peter Sanders is collaborating with the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy to launch courses built around dental implant training - specifically designed for dentists and dental care professionals. These short courses will allow dentists to advance their skills, confidence and understanding of dental implants. We asked Dr Peter Sanders, one of the UK’s leading implantologists, to explain what this means for the quality of professional implant dentistry offered to patients in the country.

Can you tell us more about the academy?

The University of Portsmouth Dental Academy is a state of the art educational facility established in partnership between the NHS and King’s College London Dental Institute (KCLDI). It’s a modern, primary-care based school that trains all members of the dental team, such as dental nurses, hygienists, therapists and dentists with a great emphasis on team training.

Why are you offering these courses?

These courses will aim to help colleagues introduce modern implantology to their practices, and therefore, to their own patients. Having an experienced surgical partner and mentor alongside them will really benefit them and give more patients up and down the country access to quality dental implants.

When implants become a regular feature of practice life, then advanced training becomes a sound clinical and financial investment. It’s a very exciting opportunity to be able to develop these Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses at the Dental Academy.

How will this benefit patients?

This new initiative will allow more dentists and dental care professionals to offer first-class implant dentistry treatment. Therefore, this will allow patients to access broader and more contemporary options for their restorative dental care.

Dr Sanders has formerly been the programme director and examiner on the implantology course at the Royal College of Surgeons. He is also the chief examiner for the implantology Master’s degree course at King Juan Carlos University of Madrid. He regularly speaks at important professional events at an international level and used to be the president of the British Society for Advanced Dentistry (BSAD).
