Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis characterised by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in the joints, most often the big toe. These attacks, called gout flares, can happen unexpectedly and are incredibly painful. While it can affect any joint, the base of the big toe is the most common location.
