How successful is HoLEP, and how does it help?
Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate, commonly known as HoLEP, is an established surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. It’s used to relieve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate by removing the tissue that blocks urine flow.
Many men consider HoLEP when symptoms persist despite medication or when other treatments are unlikely to be effective. We take a look at how successful the procedure is in order to help patients decide whether it is the right option.
How does HoLEP work?
HoLEP uses a high-powered holmium laser to separate the enlarged prostate tissue from the surrounding capsule. The obstructing tissue is then removed from the bladder. By clearing the channel through the prostate, urine can flow more freely from the bladder. The laser also seals blood vessels as it works, which reduces bleeding during and after the procedure.
The operation is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic. Most patients have a catheter for a short period afterwards while the bladder settles, and hospital stay is usually brief.
How successful is HoLEP?
HoLEP has a high success rate and is recognised as an effective long-term solution for urinary symptoms caused by prostate enlargement. Most men experience a significant improvement in urine flow and a reduction in symptoms such as urgency, weak stream and night-time urination.
The benefits of HoLEP include:
- Durable symptom relief with low rates of re-treatment
- Suitable for prostates of almost any size
- Effective even in men who have not responded to medication
- Reduced bleeding risk compared with traditional surgery
- Long lasting results supported by long term follow up data
Clinical studies have shown that improvements are maintained for many years, making HoLEP a reliable option for men seeking a definitive treatment.
What symptoms does HoLEP improve?
After recovery, many men notice easier bladder emptying, stronger urinary flow and fewer interruptions during sleep. Recurrent urinary infections related to poor bladder emptying may also reduce. Although urinary control can be temporarily affected in the early weeks, this usually improves as healing progresses.
What is recovery like?
Recovery after HoLEP is generally quick. Most patients are able to go home within one or two days. Mild burning during urination or traces of blood in the urine can occur initially and usually settle. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity are avoided for a short period, but many men return to normal routines within a couple of weeks.
Is HoLEP right for everyone?
While HoLEP is suitable for many men, it may not be appropriate in every case. A urology assessment helps determine whether symptoms are due to prostate enlargement and whether HoLEP is the best option based on prostate size, overall health and personal priorities. Alternatives may be considered for men with very mild symptoms or those who prefer less invasive treatments.
HoLEP offers an effective and durable solution for benign prostatic hyperplasia. With careful assessment and specialist care, it can significantly improve urinary symptoms and quality of life for many men.
