Choosing to undergo IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is a big decision, filled with both challenges and possibilities. Gaining insight into the process, learning how to prepare and understanding the chances of success can empower you to make informed choices and face the fertility journey with confidence. Mr César Díaz-García, distinguished fertility specialist and surgeon, explains.

What does the IVF process involve?

IVF is a medical procedure aimed at helping individuals and couples achieve pregnancy when natural conception is challenging.

The IVF journey begins with ovarian stimulation. During this phase, medications are taken to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs are mature, they are then retrieved through a minimally invasive procedure. In the laboratory, these eggs are fertilised with sperm, resulting in embryos.

After fertilisation, the embryos are cultured for 3-5 days to monitor their development. One or more viable embryos are then transferred into the uterus. If successful, the embryo will implant in the uterine lining, resulting in pregnancy. Any healthy embryos may be frozen for future use.

From start to finish, the IVF timeline takes 4-6 weeks per cycle. However, the timeline can vary depending on individual circumstances, such as how the patient responds to medications and whether additional steps like genetic testing are performed.

How can I prepare emotionally and physically for IVF?

Preparing for IVF requires both emotional and physical readiness. This preparation not only improves your chances of success but also helps you navigate the challenges of the process.

Physically

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key. Focus on a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Key nutrients like folic acid, zinc and antioxidants are particularly beneficial for reproductive health.

Exercise moderately to boost circulation, reduce stress and maintain a healthy weight, as being either underweight or overweight can impact hormonal balance and fertility. However, avoid high-intensity workouts during ovarian stimulation, as they may interfere with the process.

If you smoke, quitting is crucial, as smoking can damage egg and sperm quality, reducing the chances of a successful pregnancy. Additionally, it's essential to limit alcohol consumption and avoid recreational drugs.

Consult your fertility specialist about any medications you’re taking. Some may need to be adjusted or discontinued to better prepare your body for the hormonal changes involved in IVF.

Emotionally

IVF can be an emotionally challenging journey, with hormonal medications, the anticipation of results, and associated investments often causing stress. For this reason, building a strong support network is essential during this time. Open communication with your partner, family and trusted friends can provide comfort and help you align your expectations.

Professional psychological support is another valuable resource. Fertility counsellors can help in managing stress, while support groups (whether in-person or online) offer opportunities to connect with others facing similar experiences, fostering a sense of community.

Mindfulness practices like medication, yoga and deep breathing can further reduce stress and improve emotional wellbeing. Prioritise self-care by setting aside time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation throughout the IVF process.

What is the success rate of IVF?

The success rate of IVF depends on various factors, including age, overall health, quality of the embryos, and underlying fertility issues. Generally, younger individuals tend to have higher success rates, as the quality of eggs decreases with age. For women under 35, the success rate is 40-50% per IVF cycle.

The use of frozen embryos can also influence success rates. Advances in embryo freezing technology, such as vitrification, have significantly improved the viability of frozen embryos, which can be used in subsequent IVF cycles if the first attempt is unsuccessful, or for use in the future.

It’s also important to understand that success may not occur on the first attempt. Many individuals and couples require multiple cycles to achieve their goal of pregnancy. Maintaining open communication with your medical team can help set realistic expectations and guide you through the process.

If you’re thinking about IVF, reach out to a trusted fertility specialist to discuss your circumstances and start planning your journey to parenthood.
