Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, affects the large intestine, including the colon and rectum. It is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide and can develop slowly over several years. Early detection is crucial, as treatment is more effective in the initial stages.

The exact cause of bowel cancer is not fully understood, but several risk factors have been identified. Age is a significant factor, with most cases occurring in people over 50. Family history and genetic conditions, such as Lynch syndrome, also increase susceptibility. Lifestyle factors, including a diet low in fiber and high in red or processed meats, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical inactivity, can contribute to the development of the disease.

Symptoms of bowel cancer may vary but often include changes in bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhea or constipation, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. Because these symptoms can be caused by less serious conditions, bowel cancer may go unnoticed until it progresses, making regular screening important.

Screening methods, such as fecal occult blood tests and colonoscopies, help detect early signs of cancer or precancerous polyps. Treatment depends on the stage of the disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or targeted therapies. Advances in medical research have improved survival rates, particularly when the cancer is identified early.

Prevention strategies focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle: eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol intake, avoiding smoking, and attending regular screenings, especially for those at higher risk.

Awareness of bowel cancer and its symptoms can save lives. Early detection, coupled with healthy lifestyle choices, significantly reduces the risk and improves outcomes for those affected by this potentially life-threatening disease.
