What is analysed in a ceruloplasmin test?

The ceruloplasmin test measures the amount of ceruloplasmin in a blood sample. Copper is an essential mineral needed by your body for energy production, blood vessels, and melanin.

What does the result mean?

The result indicates the amount of ceruloplasmin present in the blood. Altered values may be related to conditions involving too much or too little copper in the body.

Why is the analysis performed?

It is used to diagnose conditions such as Wilson’s disease or malnutrition.

When is this analysis carried out?

It is done in cases of suspected Wilson’s disease or abnormal copper levels. It can also be used for monitoring the condition and assessing treatment effectiveness.

Is there any sample required?

A blood sample is needed. Fasting is generally not required. Consult your doctor for specific instructions.

How is it used?

Ceruloplasmin is interpreted alongside other tests that measure blood and/or urine copper levels. It helps evaluate iron metabolism and copper function. Normal values: There is currently no universal consensus on normal ceruloplasmin levels. Interpretation is done in relation to other parameters and clinical symptoms. Low ceruloplasmin may be associated with malnutrition, malabsorption, or Menkes syndrome. High ceruloplasmin may indicate Wilson’s disease or inflammation.
