About Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialists

What does a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist do?

A Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist diagnoses, prevents and treats conditions that cause functional limitations or disability. Their goal is to improve mobility, independence, and quality of life through a holistic approach, coordinating a personalised rehabilitation plan tailored to each patient.

Why would you be referred to see a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist?

Referrals usually happen when a functional limitation affects movement or daily activities. This is common after surgery and accidents, or if you have a neurological condition, chronic pain or experience degenerative diseases. The aim of this process is to help patients regain their ability and minimise long-term functional impact.

When should you see a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist?

If pain, stiffness or difficulty moving lasts for several weeks or begins to affect everyday activities such as working, walking or resting, seeing a rehabilitation specialist is common practice. It’s not only for severe injuries, either: one in three people worldwide need rehabilitation (World Health Organization, 2024), and musculoskeletal conditions affect around one in five people (World Health Organization, 2022). In addition, around 12 million strokes occur globally each year (World Stroke Organization, 2025).

Why choose a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist?

A specialist is trained to take a holistic approach to care; that’s focussed on how patients function in everyday life. They combine clinical assessment with tailored physical treatments and coordinate multidisciplinary teams to set realistic, sustainable functional goals.

What are the types of patients seen by a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist?

They care for patients of all ages with temporary or permanent disability, including people with neurological or musculoskeletal conditions, athletes, older adults, children, oncology patients and people recovering from accidents or complex surgery.

What conditions are treated by a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist?

How should I prepare for my appointment with a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist?

Bring previous medical reports, diagnostic test results, and a clear list of symptoms. Defining and stating your functional goals, such as improving mobility or reducing pain, can also help to guide a realistic and progressive rehabilitation plan.
