Mr Alastair Marsh is a highly experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in both elective (planned) and trauma surgery of the foot and ankle. He has a particular focus on sports injuries to the ankle (such as ligament and tendon injuries), bunions and big toe arthritis (hallux valgus and hallux rigidus) alongside other foot and ankle conditions such as Morton’s neuroma, arthritis and tendon problems. His private practise is based at The Harborne Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK, and his NHS base is Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he is known for his expertise in treating complex foot and ankle trauma and multiply injured patients.
Mr Marsh began his medical education at the University of Birmingham, where he earned his MBChB in 1995. He then pursued advanced surgical training on the prestigious South West Thames/St George's Rotation, working alongside internationally renowned surgeons. He undertook a fellowship in trauma and foot and ankle surgery in New Zealand, completing the intercollegiate Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma and Orthopaedics) exam in 2005.
In his clinical practice, Mr Marsh is adept at addressing a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, from common issues like big toe arthritis, bunions and hammer/claw toes to more complex deformities. His sub-specialties include managing neuromas, ankle ligament and tendon injuries, Achilles tendon problems, fractures and osteoarthritis. Additionally, he has significant expertise in post-trauma reconstruction (which includes amputation and realignment fusions), sports injuries, providing comprehensive care for patients with traumatic and degenerative foot and ankle conditions. He works closely with podiatrists, reconstructive plastic surgeons, rehabilitation case managers and sports medicine consultants to provide the optimum care for patients.
Mr Marsh is actively involved in medical education, as a recognised trainer for higher and core trauma & Orthopaedic trainees. He is educational faculty for AO delivering training in fracture fixation. He is also a member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS).
In addition to his surgical practice, Mr Marsh remains very involved in the management of multiply injured patients, after being clinical lead for the Major Trauma Service at the University Hospitals Birmingham from 2016-2026.
