Mr Anthony Gibbon is a consultant orthopaedic specialist knee surgeon practising in York. He specialises in all aspects of the knee, including arthritis, injuries, replacements (both total and partial), ACL reconstruction, pain, and cartilage repair. Mr Gibbon introduced complex knee arthroscopic procedures to York in 1997.
Mr Gibbon qualified in medicine from the University of London in 1987, and conducted higher and specialist surgical training in London, Essex, and Norwich. He undertook further training with two awarded fellowships that took him to the USA to conduct research at Harvard Medical School and visit major other US centres. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1991. Upon the completion of a trauma fellowship in Austria in 1997, Mr Gibbon was appointed consultant surgeon. He established a specialist knee surgery unit at York Teaching Hospital, introducing arthroscopic cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscal repair, partial knee replacement, and enhanced recovery pathways.
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Gibbon has been involved with medical education, teaching surgical techniques to trainees and orthopaedics to students at Hull York Medical School.
Many of his senior fellows (trainees) are successful Consultant Surgeons throughout the world, mostly in the UK, but also in India, Israel and Libya.
Mr Gibbon has given many lectures, nationally and internationally, teaching and demonstrating knee surgical techniques in the UK, Spain, India and Brazil.
He is actively involved in research studies evaluating outcomes of knee replacement surgery.
He carries out over 300 knee replacements annually, his results in the National Joint Registry (NJR) being in the top 5% in the UK.

- My left knee, following a cartilage tear 20+ years ago was failing, causing sharp but intermittent pain. I met Dr Gibbon at Clifton Park. The meeting was brisk, business-like and very informative. I left confident understanding the precise procedure required. 3 months later, Dec '25, the surgery was completed. Day 6 I completed my first full bike revolutions, at 3 months I started golf. I had a flare up of bursitis which Dr Gibbon immediately treated. I rarely, if ever, think about my knee now.
- Can’t fault anything except perhaps the lack of phisio. Mr Gibbon is quietly reassuring and inspires confidence. He said he would get me walking the Lake District fells again and he did. On my 80 th birthday no less
- Mr Gibbon was excellent, very matter of fact and his explanation of the condition and diagnosis was very clear. His explanation of the operation, after-care and what to expect following the treatment was absolutely accurate and my road to recovery has been directed by his views, needless to say that I have been delighted with the progress that I have made in such a short period of time. If I was to have any further operations of such magnitude, I would not hesitate to have Mr Gibbon at the helm.

- I appreciate how quickly Mr Gibbon referred me for my knee replacements (Feb and June). I'd made my condition known to my GP in 2014. I was made comfortable at The Nuffield Hospital and treated by very efficiently and pleasantly by all the staff.
- Outpatients waiting room not very comfortable and sometimes very crowded. All staff encountered on site were exceptionally pleasant. Overall I was very satisfied. In the spirit of helping your desire to improve I would mention pre assessment arrangements were poor resulting in me having to return for further physio assessment following a phone call from pre assessment stating that Clifton Park would not be able to offer the operation due to my dislocated shoulder. The call was poorly handled.
