Professional statement
Dr Ben Mercer is a leading and highly renowned consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist based at the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary, one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals. He completed his medical degree at the University of Leeds in 2007 and subsequently undertook extensive specialist training in Cardiology and Electrophysiology in the West Yorkshire region. He completed his PhD at the University of Leeds in 2014.
Dr Mercer’s specialist area of expertise is the diagnosis and management of cardiac arrhythmias, including a wide range of heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, ectopic beats and ventricular tachycardia. He has particular expertise in catheter ablation procedures used to treat these conditions.
In addition to arrhythmia management and ablation, Dr Mercer has extensive experience in the implantation of cardiac devices, including conventional and complex pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators. His areas of clinical interest also include cardioversion, cardiac electrophysiology, ECG and ambulatory ECG monitoring, exercise ECG testing, cardiac risk assessment and cardiac resynchronisation therapy.
He is a member of the British Heart Rhythm Society and has published extensively in the fields of cardiology, electrophysiology, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and cardiovascular medicine.

- Dr Ben Mercer provided an excellent service in a very measured and reassuring way. In the end I had two cardioversions and two ablations, with the final one resulting in my long standing AF going into normal rhythm. The whole process was very well explained with the risks and potential outcomes being fully explored. I felt very confident during the whole process. I had quite a few pre-assessment visits and the nursing staff (Tina) were also very good.
- I as very anxious after being in A&E and diagnosed with Afib and being put on Abixapan immediately. Excellent consultation, covered all aspects, was carefully listened to. Dr read previous letters I had taken with me. Followed by a discussi and given clear guidelines. As I was self funding and a heart condition would be an ongoing problem, unlike a fixed price package eg Hip Replacement, I chose to be treated by the NHS. My frien had highly recommended Dr Mercer too now have complete confidence
