Professional statement
Dr Bode Ensam is a highly experienced consultant cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist, currently practising at The Harborne Hospital. His expertise covers a wide range of cardiac conditions, with a particular focus on the treatment of arrhythmia with catherter ablation. This includes atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). He also specialises in inherited cardiac disorders, sudden arrhythmic death syndromes (SADS) and sports cardiology and has undertaken extensive research in this field and is the author of a number of internationally recognised articles.
He undertook cardiology training across the West Midlands, followed by a prestigious clinical and research fellowship at St George’s Hospital in London, where he focused on inherited cardiac conditions and sports cardiology under the mentorship of the renowned Professor Elijah Behr. During his fellowship, Dr Ensam developed in-depth expertise in rare and complex electrical heart disorders such as Brugada syndrome, long-QT syndrome, and Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (CPVT).
As a fellow for Cardiac Risk in the Young UK (CRY-UK), he expanded his knowledge by working extensively with athletes to assess their cardiovascular health. His research into Brugada Syndrome, supported by over £300,000 in funding from the British Heart Foundation, has significantly contributed to the understanding of sudden unexplained cardiac death in young people. Upon his return to the West Midlands, Dr Ensam undertook further advanced training in cardiac electrophysiology.
He later served as a senior electrophysiology fellow at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where he refined his skills in complex arrhythmia treatments, performing over 300 catheter ablations and over 150 pacemaker and defibrillator implantations in a single year. His exceptional clinical achievements culminated in his appointment as a consultant in cardiac electrophysiology and inherited cardiac conditions in 2022. In addition to his clinical work, Dr Ensam is actively involved in teaching and research, having published numerous papers in leading medical journals and presenting at major international conferences. His passion for sports cardiology continues, as he participates in cardiovascular screenings for elite athletes in collaboration with various sports organisations, including the Football Association and British Athletics.
