Ms Catherine Rennie
Professional statement
Ms Catherine Rennie is a highly distinguished consultant ENT surgeon and consultant in rhinology based in London. She specialises in a variety of otolaryngology conditions, including nasal polyps, sinusitis, rhinitis, broken nose, and deviated septum, but also has experience in endoscopic sinus surgeries, septorhinoplasties and CSF leak repairs. Ms Rennie currently practises at Charing Cross Hospital and the healthcare centre, OneWellbeck.
After graduating from Imperial College in 2003, Ms Rennie remained in London, where she undertook her ENT specialist training in Otolaryngology on the London North Thames rotation, working with the UK’s top ENT surgeons at Charing Cross Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, and more. She then went on to accomplish additional training in 2016 after winning the prestigious post CCT Rhinology from the Royal College of Surgeons. During her fellowship, Ms Rennie acquired experience on advanced endoscopic sinus surgery, anterior skull base surgery and complex nasal reconstructions. Two two-week clinic oberserverships in rhinology, at Johns Hopkins and at Stanford sinus centre, gave her an international perspective.
Moved by her interest in evolving advances in rhinology, Ms Rennie took out time from her training in 2014 to complete her PhD at Imperial College. Working cross-departmental, she analysed sinonasal flow and transport: a research which led to an increased understanding of the distribution of airflow in the nasal airways and the design of precision-metered drug delivery systems.
Ms Rennie also worked through the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020: first as an ENT surgeon in the COVID-19 tracheostomy service at Imperial College Healthcare Trust, and later as the lead researcher of a team of clinicians and designers at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team. Together, they investigated ways of reducing aerosol spread of COVID-19 in hospitals, coming to co-develop the ‘Zephyr hood,’ an aerosol containment device which acts as a shield around the patient who has tested positive.
