Dr Chander Shekhar is an experienced consultant gastroenterologist with an extensive clinical and research interests specialising in digestive symptoms, bowel disorders, acid reflux, pancreato-biliary conditions, and advanced minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. He is fluent in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu, he is skilled in managing a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions, including acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, dyspepsia, indigestion, bloating, constipation, pancreatitis, changes in bowel habits, and suspected gastrointestinal cancers.
Dr Shekhar trained in London, Manchester, and the West Midlands and currently works as a consultant gastroenterologist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, alongside private practice at the Meriden Hospital in Coventry. He has a specialist interest in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), capsule endoscopy, and minimally invasive removal of large bowel polyps and selected early cancers without surgery.
Dr Shekhar has a strong interest in clinical research, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and innovative endoscopy techniques. His work at the Neurogastroenterology Unit at the University Hospital of South Manchester has resulted in numerous national and international presentations and publications.
He completed an MD at the University of Manchester and undertook advanced endoscopy fellowship training at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. He was awarded the British Society of Gastroenterology travelling endoscopy fellowship in Hamburg, Germany, and his current research interests include colon capsule endoscopy and artificial intelligence in endoscopy.
From 2022 to 2024, Dr Shekhar served as Clinical Service Lead for Gastroenterology at UHCW. He is actively involved in endoscopy training and teaches Warwick Medical School students.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Shekhar is an endoscopy trainer and teaches medical students from Warwick Medical School. He also manages a specialist clinic for patients with dyspepsia, digestive tract disorders, and those requiring advanced therapeutic endoscopy procedures across the Coventry and Warwickshire region. He is a member of the Midland Gastroenterology Society and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), and also serves as an elected member of the BSG pancreato-biliary committee.
