Mr David Pemberton
Professional statement
Mr David Pemberton is currently President of the Welsh Orthopaedic Society. He is a renowned senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a specialisation in lower limb surgery, particularly knee-related conditions. Since becoming a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in 1995, he has focused increasingly on knee surgery, especially soft tissue injuries. As a result, he has developed extensive experience in knee reconstruction, particularly for athletes at all levels.
With over 30 years of experience as a consultant, following a year of specialised Fellowship training in Adelaide, South Australia, Mr Pemberton has maintained a strong passion for sports medicine, particularly in managing sports-related injuries. He serves as an honorary orthopaedic surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union and the Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey team, and has previously worked with the Wales Under-20s and 'A' sides, along with the Ospreys and Gwent Dragons regions.
Sports injuries represent only a small portion of his clinical work; the majority of his patients require treatment for degenerative conditions, including knee cartilage tears and arthritis. While his focus is knee surgery, Mr Pemberton also performs primary hip replacement, and was a pioneer of ceramic bearing hip implants in Wales. His practice includes the often difficult management of knee arthritis in young, active patients, performing osteotomy and other cartilage-preserving procedures.
He is a strong advocate of unicompartmental and dual compartment knee replacement, preserving the patient’s cruciate ligaments and other compartments wherever possible.
