Mr Dennis Kosuge
Professional statement
Mr Dennis Kosuge is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip replacement, knee replacement, and revision hip surgery, based at The Rivers Hospital, Sawbridgeworth, and The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, Harlow. He serves patients from across West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including Bishop's Stortford, Epping, Hertford, Chelmsford, Ware, and the surrounding areas.
Mr Kosuge's specialist procedures include total hip replacement, complex and revision hip replacement, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement (unicompartmental knee replacement), knee arthroscopy, meniscal surgery, and the full range of hip and knee injections including Arthrosamid — an innovative hydrogel injection for knee osteoarthritis. He also manages the full spectrum of hip and knee conditions, including osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, hip osteoarthritis, labral tears, avascular necrosis, developmental dysplasia of the hip, trochanteric bursitis, meniscal tears, and patellofemoral conditions.
Mr Kosuge has particular expertise in complex and revision hip replacement, including the reconstruction of severe acetabular defects. He was co-author of an award-winning presentation on this topic at the 86th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in 2019.
His patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) demonstrate results consistently above the national average: a hip replacement health gain of 25.46 versus the national average of 22.30, and a knee replacement health gain of 19.41 versus the national average of 16.82 (NHS Digital, 2023–24). He monitors his outcomes systematically and publishes his data on his website.
Mr Kosuge has been awarded the iWantGreatCare Certificate of Excellence every year from 2019 to 2025 — seven consecutive years. In 2024, he received the Patient Panel Consultant Award at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, Harlow, and in 2021 he received the 'Our Amazing People Award' at the same institution.
He completed his specialist hip and knee training through a one-year fellowship under Professor Donald Howie at The Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia, and has undertaken prestigious international fellowships including the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Zimmer Adult Reconstruction Fellowship in Japan (2014), an AOTrauma Fellowship (2013), and a Tohoku University Orthopaedic Visiting Fellowship (2010).
Mr Kosuge is Principal Investigator at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust for the national NIHR-funded 'Obesity and Arthritis of the Knee Study (OAKS)'. He is widely published in peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals, has contributed chapters to orthopaedic textbooks, and has served as a reviewer for The Bone & Joint Journal since 2010.
He holds a full-time NHS consultant post at The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, where he participates in the general trauma on-call rota in addition to his elective hip and knee practice.
Private consultations are available at The Rivers Hospital, Sawbridgeworth. Mr Kosuge is recognised by all major health insurers including BUPA, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Allianz, Healix, Benenden, and The Exeter. Self-pay patients are warmly welcomed.
