Dr Derek Chan is a highly esteemed consultant gastroenterologist with a wealth of experience in his field, particularly in function bowel disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He is also expert in the management of reflux, change in bowel habits and abdominal pain.
Dr Chan completed his undergraduate studies at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London Hospital Medical School, graduating in 2003. Following this, he undertook his postgraduate training within the South West Thames area, spending numerous years conducting research at St George's Hospital, London. This research investigated the role of diet and gut bacteria on inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Chan continues to be active in research while also seeing private patients at Spire St. Anthony’s Hospital and Ramsay Ashtead Hospital.
Dr Chan is also a respected educator involved in the teaching of many junior doctors and holds the position of gastroenterology training lead at St Helier Hospital. His expert knowledge has featured in articles on bowel health in publications including The Mail on Sunday and Women’s Health. He prides himself on providing second-to-none patient care, as recognised by his recent Certificate of Excellence award from IWantGreatCare.
