Mr Edward Caruana

Mr Edward Caruana is a highly regarded consultant thoracic surgeon based in Leicester and Nottingham. He offers video and telephone consultations, often accommodating same- or next-day appointments when feasible, as well as in-person consultations at The Park Hospital.

Mr Caruana specialises in thoracic surgery, with particular expertise in lung cancer and the assessment and treatment of lung nodules (including ION robotic bronchoscopy). He also has a specialist interest in pneumothorax (collapsed lung), and conditions affecting the diaphragm, including diaphragm elevation or paralysis, where diaphragm plication can improve sympthoms in suitable patients. In addition, he provides comprehensive care for a wide range of chest conditions, including metastatic disease affecting the lungs and chest wall injuries such as fractured ribs, with a focus on pain relief and recovery.

Mr Caruana qualified in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Malta and completed his specialist cardiothoracic surgical training across Cambridge, Nottingham and Leicester in the UK. He further refined his expertise with an advanced fellowship in single-incision keyhole thoracic surgery at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, a centre internationally recognised for its leadership in minimally invasive thoracic surgery. He also holds Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic Surgery (FRCS(CTh)).

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Caruana is actively involved in research, education and professional leadership within thoracic surgery. He is an Honorary Lecturer and the Undergraduate Lead for Thoracic Surgery at the University of Leicester. He plays a key role in national and international professional groups: he chairs the Diaphragm Working Group of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland (SCTS) and the Pleural Disease Working Group of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS). He has also published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as contributing to international clinical guidelines.
