Dr Gary D Wright has been a Consultant Rheumatologist in Belfast for 30 years. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory and non-inflammatory rheumatic conditions. He specialises in the early diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory arthritis such as psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. He also has an interest in gout and crystal disease, connective tissue disease, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and soft tissue rheumatism. He is a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust and he consults privately at The Belfast Rheumatology Clinic and Kingsbridge Private Hospital Belfast.
Dr Wright qualified in medicine from Queen’s University Belfast in 1987 and completed his postgraduate rheumatology training in Belfast and Nottingham. He obtained his MD in genetics in 1992. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Ireland.
He is the past President of the Irish Society for Rheumatology from 2012 to 2014. He has also previously held the role of Royal College of Physicians of London Regional Advisor for Northern Ireland.
He holds EFSUMB Level 3 certification in musculoskeletal ultrasound and regularly uses ultrasound to support accurate diagnosis and guide treatment decisions in patients with rheumatology disorders. He is an experienced tutor on the basic and advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound courses for both the British Society for Rheumatology and the Irish Society for Rheumatology.
Alongside his clinical work, he is an honorary clinical lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast and is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Dr Wright has a strong research background, with interests including the genetics of rheumatic disease, osteoarthritis, early diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory arthritis, and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications across all areas of rheumatology and has contributed to medical education as a guest editor for the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
