Dr Guy Haywood

Dr Guy Haywood is a highly-experienced consultant cardiologist based in Plymouth who manages all types of heart disease. His areas of expertise include atrial fibrillation, cardiac ablation, arrhythmia, chest pain, palpitations and shortness of breath.

He has trained extensively in the investigation and treatment of heart disorders at various hospitals both in the UK and abroad including St George's Hospital, London and Stanford University Hospital Medical School, California.

After being appointed as a consultant at Derriford Hospital Plymouth in 1996, he helped set up the South West Cardiothoracic Centre (SWCC) - the cardiac surgery centre for Devon and Cornwall. He then visited centres in France, Germany, Italy and the USA to gain more experience and expand the range of treatments and technologies he can offer and also to enable the SWCC to establish new complex procedures. These include electro-anatomical mapping for the treatment of heart rhythm problems and to introduce the first atrial fibrillation ablation program in Devon and Cornwall.

In addition to his consultancy work, Dr Haywood is an executive council member of Arrhythmia Alliance UK and is a founder member of the UK EP Multicentre Trials Group. He also served on the Heart Rhythm UK Council, the clinical practice committee at the British Cardiac Society and was a member of the Department of Health's Expert Group on Cardiac Arrhythmias. At present, he is an advisory consultant to several medical device companies helping to develop the next range of therapies for heart diseases and his inventions in the field of catheter ablation have resulted in novel catheters now on the market or in current development. He regularly lectures and presents at national and international meetings in the field of Cardiac Electrophysiology.

From 1/1/2021 my private medical practice company, At Heart Ltd, has been supporting reforestation charity work. £10 from each private consultation or heart procedure fee has gone to support tree planting in Asia and Africa and this has resulted in over 30,000 trees being planted so far. This work, by supporting communities carrying out the reforestation, alleviates poverty at the same time as helping the planet. We are now starting a partnership with The International Tree Foundation, a long established, outstanding organisation involved in this work. More news on this partnership will follow shortly.
