Dr Heather Sequeira
Professional statement
Dr Heather Sequeira is a chartered consultant psychologist and internationally recognised authority on the intersection of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and psychological trauma. With over 20 years of experience, she is one of the UK’s leading specialists in trauma-related OCD, working with complex, treatment-resistant presentations in both NHS and private settings.
Many people who go to Dr Sequeira have already done therapy and are frustrated by how little has shifted. They may have tried established approaches, yet the checking, monitoring or reassurance-seeking remains. Dr Sequeira specialises in the presentations where OCD is not only about intrusive thoughts, but also a deeper, long-learned drive to prevent things going wrong.
She works across a full range of OCD, including intrusive-thought OCD such as harm themes, ROCD, POCD, and more common forms of OCD.
With lived experience of OCD, Dr Sequeira understands this work both personally and professionally.
Through her clinical work, Dr Sequeira has developed an approach she refers to as Trauma-Linked Compulsivity. This recognises that for some people, compulsive patterns are shaped by earlier trauma, stressful life experiences and shame. They need a more tailored clinical approach. Her therapeutic methods include evidence-based CBT for OCD, including ERP, alongside ACT-informed work and other trauma-integrated approaches selected to fit the individual. When the approach truly fits, therapy becomes more efficient and outcomes are more durable, supporting lasting, meaningful change rather than repeated cycles of temporary relief.
Dr Sequeira leads the OCD Service in her NHS Trust and provides specialist therapy to high-functioning individuals worldwide. She is the founder of PTSDTraumaWorkshops, delivering advanced training for psychologists and organisations on PTSD, complex trauma, dissociation, and trauma-related compulsive patterns.
She holds a PhD in psychological trauma from St George's Hospital Medical School and serves as Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham’s School of Psychology. She is also a visiting lecturer, doctoral supervisor, and mentor to early-career psychologists. Her work is helping shape a new generation of trauma-informed clinical practice at the interface of OCD, trauma, and complex stress presentations. She is currently writing a trauma handbook with the British Psychological Society and Routledge, bringing together contemporary evidence and real-world clinical practice.
A regular contributor to national media including the BBC and Sky News, Dr Sequeira is known for translating psychological science into therapy that is precise, practical, and deeply humane.

- Her expertise in trauma and trauma related OCD were fundamental to my recovery. Having lived with OCD for nearly 20 years, I thought this was a condition I would have to accept living with - from my work with Heather, I now know there is a life without OCD.
- Excellent. She is very professional, straightforward and kind person. She and got me over my ocd which had been really bad. A different type of approach from what I have tried before. Much better. I advise going straight to the best. Don't waste your time (and money) going elsewhere. Just contact her and have the best therapy for OCD straight away.
- I've tried several therapists before for OCD but nothing really worked. Heather was the one who helped me live my life again how I want. Don't mess about. See the best straight away and move on with your life.
- After a recent severe OCD relapse, Heather helped me recover quickly with expert, compassionate care. Her firm yet kind approach, practical toolkit, and inclusion of my husband in the therapy transformed my progress. I felt understood and supported on every level.
- I cannot rcommend Dr. Sequeira highly enough. She is an exceptionally skilled and very compassionate specialist combining deep clinical expertise with genuine empathy. From tbe very first session I felt safe and she created a non-judgmental environment helping me feel understood.
- I am really pleased with the treatment I have received and the progress I have made. Heather has taught me new coping methods and different ways to deal with my OCD to give me a better understanding and I really grateful for that.
- My only regret is that I left it so long. Dr Heather was amazing. She works in a different way from previous therapists, and it works. She is straightforward, easy to talk to and obviously cares deeply about what she does. Don't regret leaving it so long like I did
- Really recommended. After therapy my OCD no longer runs my life. I understand what triggers it and how to deal with it. I feel like i have a life again.
- I’d tried therapy before but nothing changed long-term. With Heather, the progress stuck. I understand myself better and feel stronger than I have in years. Thankyou. I recommend that you do it.
- The changes have been real and lasting. Heather’s way of working is direct, kind and incredibly effective. I’ve gone from fear and compulsions to enjoying life again. I feel like I know myself again.
