Dr Iyad Ismail

Dr Iyad Ismail is a respiratory consultant in Birmingham, who specialises in lung cancer, sleep apnoea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alongside cough, shortness of breath and pleural effusion. He privately practises at Spire Little Aston Hospital and Sutton Medical Consulting Centre, while his NHS bases are University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, where he is the lung cancer lead.

Dr Ismail graduated in 2000 from the Jordan University of Science and Technology with honours and was awarded a merit scholarship by the United Nations. He completed his training in the UK, achieving CCT in respiratory and general medicine in 2014, and pursued a fellowship in interventional procedures at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

With a subspecialty focus on pleural diseases, Dr Ismail is proficient in procedures such as thoracic ultrasound, bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), alongside pleural aspiration, indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) insertion and chest drain management. He also manages a wide range of respiratory conditions, including asthma, bronchiectasis and sarcoidosis, as well as respiratory failure, tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) and excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC), which the latter two are are often misdiagnosed as asthma or COPD.

Dr Ismail is an active member of the British Thoracic Society, Midland Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society. His dedication to advancing respiratory care includes ongoing research in lung cancer and pleural disease, contributing to evidence-based practices that enhance patient outcomes.
