Professional statement
Mr Jan Herzog is a consultant spinal surgeon who practices in Stanmore, Bushey and Central London. He specialises in complex paediatric and adult spinal deformities, including scoliosis and kyphosis. He also has a special interest in degenerative pathologies of the spine, including spinal stenosis, sciatica, lower back pain and disc disease.
He is an expert in spinal fusion for neurogenic pain and minimally invasive spinal procedures, and uses spinal navigation regularly. He currently practises at RNOH Stanmore, HCA Healthcare UK Elstree Waterfront Outpatients, and HCA Healthcare UK The Princess Grace Hospital.
Mr Herzog qualified from Humboldt University of Berlin in 2004 and then obtained his MSc in Diagnostic Imaging from Oxford University, before going on to complete his surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics in Germany. He then received a visiting fellowship to Harvard university teaching hospital in Boston and was later appointed trauma and orthopaedic consultant at Charité in Berlin, where he developed his medical interest in spinal surgery. To pursue this speciality, Mr Herzog relocated to the UK, where he accomplished three spinal fellowships: at Frimley Park Hospital, at St George’s and at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Further to his spinal surgery practice, Mr Herzog is actively involved in the research of scoliosis, spinal myeloma, and spinal navigation. He is the author of several publications, has lectured both nationally and internationally, and has a special interest in back pain in athletes due to his background in international rowing for Germany (both as an athlete and a national team doctor). Mr Herzog is on the GMC’s specialist register for trauma and orthopaedic surgery and is a member of the British Scoliosis Society and the Deutsche Wirbelsäulengesellschaft.
