Mr Jonathan Hughes

Mr Jonathan Hughes is a leading consultant ENT / head and neck / thyroid surgeon in London. He treats adults and children with a wide range of ENT conditions and has particular interests in voice, swallowing and breathing disorders, head and neck tumours, including thyroid conditions, and sleep-related disorders such as sleep apnoea and snoring. He has a high-volume head and neck / thyroid practice at University College London Hospitals and Royal Free London NHS trusts since 2015 and is the chairman of the Royal Free London Head and Neck Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT). He has a busy private practice in North London and The Chilterns, including Cleveland Clinic London Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Portland Place Outpatient Centre.

With a strong focus on surgical innovation, Mr Hughes specialises in advanced minimally invasive techniques, including transoral robotic surgery (TORS), thyroid radiofrequency ablation and laser surgery. He was among the first surgeons in the UK to perform transoral “scarless” robotic and endoscopic thyroidectomy procedures designed to avoid visible neck scars (TORTVA/TOETVA). His work reflects a commitment to developing surgical approaches that expand the options available for patients requiring treatment for thyroid and head and neck conditions.

Mr Hughes's academic background includes a research fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where he investigated viral gene therapy for cancer treatment and subsequently earned a PhD. He also completed two further fellowships with the College and international travelling fellowships in the United States, gaining experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
