Professor Lyndon Mason is an experienced consultant orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon, practising in Liverpool and the Isle of Man. He specialises in managing conditions such as bunions (hallux valgus), big toe arthritis, complex deformity corrections, arthritis-related surgeries, and sports-related foot and ankle injuries.
Professor Mason graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine and completed his orthopaedic training in Wales before relocating to Liverpool as a consultant specialising in major trauma and foot and ankle surgery.
Before joining the Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Mason undertook British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) travelling fellowships at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA, and Carl Gustav Carus University, Dresden, Germany. While in Liverpool, he received the prestigious BOFAS Gold Fellowship Award.
Professor Mason’s groundbreaking research has earned both national and international recognition, securing more than 30 regional, national, and international awards over the past decade. Notably, he was awarded the Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2020 for his work on ankle fractures, the Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize in 2017 for his research on the evolution of the foot, and the Jacques Duparc Prize from EFORT for discovering a new foot ligament. Additionally, Professor Mason has won the Chan Chen Memorial Prize—BOFAS’s highest accolade—on four separate occasions. In 2023, he received a National Clinical Impact Award (Level 1) in recognition of his contributions to safe, high-quality care and the improvement of NHS services.
Professor Mason holds the position of Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Liverpool, where he serves as the undergraduate lead for Musculoskeletal Disease and Orthopaedics in the School of Medicine. He is also a highly regarded national educator, frequently serving as an invited faculty member for courses conducted by the British Orthopaedic Association, Royal College of Surgeons, AO, Royal Society of Medicine, and BOFAS. Furthermore, he is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority.
Currently, Professor Mason chairs the Clinical Practice Committee and is a council member of BOFAS. Previously, he chaired the Outcomes Committee, overseeing the National Foot and Ankle Registry.
