He specialises in managing conditions such as bunions (hallux valgus), big toe arthritis, complex deformity corrections, arthritis-related surgeries, and sports-related foot and ankle injuries.

Professor Mason graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine and completed his orthopaedic training in Wales before relocating to Liverpool as a consultant specialising in major trauma and foot and ankle surgery.

Before joining the Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Mason undertook British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) travelling fellowships at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA, and Carl Gustav Carus University, Dresden, Germany. While in Liverpool, he received the prestigious BOFAS Gold Fellowship Award.

Notably, he was awarded the Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2020 for his work on ankle fractures, the Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize in 2017 for his research on the evolution of the foot, and the Jacques Duparc Prize from EFORT for discovering a new foot ligament. Additionally, Professor Mason has won the Chan Chen Memorial Prize—BOFAS’s highest accolade—on four separate occasions. In 2023, he received a National Clinical Impact Award (Level 1) in recognition of his contributions to safe, high-quality care and the improvement of NHS services.
