Mr Matt Hampton is a highly experienced consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. He also maintains a private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital and Thornbury Hospital. Specialising in all aspects of knee surgery, his expertise includes arthroscopy, primary and revision ligament reconstruction, patella dislocations, cartilage repair and transplantation, osteotomy, and primary partial and totalknee arthroplasty.
Matt is dedicated to helping his patients stay active through both non-surgical and surgical treatments, prioritising a patient-specific approach. He advocates for joint-preserving techniques whenever feasible, tailoring his care to individual needs. For younger, more active patients requiring total knee arthroplasty, Matt offers the option of uncemented knee replacements. These advanced techniques aim to lower the likelihood of future revision surgeries compared to traditional cemented replacements. At Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Matt manages a complex tertiary referral practice, treating cases such as knee ligament injuries, cartilage repair and transplantation, osteotomy, and patella stabilisation.
He is among the few fellowship-trained surgeons in Northern England qualified to perform trochleoplasty surgery, a specialised procedure to address severe trochlea dysplasia—a condition that causes recurrent patella dislocations. Trochleoplasty involves reshaping the groove at the end of the femur to improve stability and prevent further dislocations. Matt completed his higher surgical training in the South Yorkshire rotation and earned his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2022. He further honed his skills with prestigious fellowships in knee surgery at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in London and the renowned Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.
Additionally, he trained under world-leading knee specialists in the United States (Brian Cole) and Canada (Alan Getgood), gaining advanced expertise in sports knee interventions. In addition to his clinical practice, Matt is an active researcher focused on enhancing outcomes in knee surgery. With over 50 peer-reviewed publications and numerous national and international presentations, he has significantly contributed to the field.
He has served as the research fellow for the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and is a member-at-large of the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA). Passionate about education, Matt trains specialist registrars and oversees a fellowship program at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to prepare the next generation of knee surgeons.
